Management Accident Response

  1. Accident Scene Activity

The first and foremost goal upon arrival at the accident scene is to help the injured employee. Upon notification, the supervisor in charge of the injured employee should go directly to the accident scene and assess what level of response is necessary.

    • If emergency services are required, the supervisor should stay with the injured employee until first aid had been rendered, or in the case of serious injury, until the employee is transported for further medical care. In the event of multiple injuries, additional supervisors should be summoned to the scene to provide assistance.
    • If first aid is required, notify first responders.
    • Once care for the injured party is in progress, identify witnesses, and ask them to stay to describe what happened.
    • If any cleanup of blood is required the guards contact the appropriate individual. The site of the blood must be secured according to the blood-borne pathogens procedure.

  2. Emergency Medical Care and Treatment

If outside medical care is necessary, the supervisor should assign someone to call security to request ambulance transport. The following information is necessary:

    • injured employee's name and approximate age
    • reason for transport: chest pain, injury, dizziness, coma, head injury. This information will provide the most appropriate emergency personnel for the situation.

While waiting for the emergency personnel:

    • assign someone to clear the area of extra personnel and eliminate all other traffic.
    • send someone to direct the first responders to the scene.
    • ask the employee whom the victim would like to notify.

Once the employee has been moved from the area, find out from the ambulance crew where they are going with the employee. This information is important when you call the family.

  3. Notification of Management

In the event of serious injury the department head (for the injured employee) should be notified immediately.

The accident investigation , including an accurate description of the accident and interviews with witnesses, must be completed before the responsible supervisor leaves the premises on the shift when the accident occurs. Amendments to the accident report will be made once further information becomes available.

Copies of the accident report should be delivered to the department head, the safety coordinator and Human Resources.

  4. Family Notification

Be gentle with family members. Remember that you are providing this information over the phone. Provide basic information such as the employee injured their hand, back, etc., and is being sent to the hospital to be "checked out". Do not provide rumors or the worst case scenario and frighten them. Ask them to call you and let you know how the employee is doing after they return from the hospital.

  5. Communications Post Injury

After an injury, it is important that the employee receives prompt, aggressive treatment, and returns to work as soon as possible. This requires frequent contact with the employee, at least once every week. Include some of the following points in your conversation:

    • Express concern for the employee's well being. Keep them informed of activities at work.
    • Ask if he would like to receive calls/cards from his co-workers. Post address if necessary.
    • Create a return to work expectation in the employee's mind. You have a need to know how long he will be out.
    • Remind the employee that their obligation during disability is to complete treatment and get well.
    • Assure them their job and co-workers are waiting for them.
